Email & call by May 26 — School Board votes in June
Round 2 — The School Board

It's Not
Over.

The County Council kept the bus depot in the budget. Now the decision moves to the MCPS Board of Education — and they need to hear from us.

Where things stand: The bus depot remains in the six-year CIP, and the Board of Education votes in June. This is the next and best near-term opportunity to be heard, and the campaign continues beyond this vote.

Why It Matters

What residents are telling the Board

1
Wrong use for the parcel The proposal inserts a highly incompatible industrial use into the middle of an environmentally sensitive, residentially zoned area.
2
No due process The proposal was developed without standard due process, with no community notice and no opportunity for input from impacted residents.
3
Heavy traffic on Shady Grove Rd 250+ buses plus employee vehicles on Cavanaugh Drive, Shady Grove Road, and Piney Meetinghouse Road. Seven Willows of Potomac streets have their only ingress and egress on Shady Grove Road — residents have raised concerns that the depot's entrance is proposed there as well.
4
Diesel fumes & noise near homes Idling, refueling, and early-morning and late-night activity adjacent to family homes.
5
It's an issue of trust Residents deserve a government that acts transparently, follows due process, and honors its commitments.

The message — for email & phone

I am a member of the community adjacent to the parcel of land owned by MCPS proposed to be used as a new school bus depot. The parcel (Wootton ES Site #7) is located at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and Cavanaugh Drive. I am strongly opposed to the use of this land for a bus depot. I strongly oppose MCPS putting a bus depot in our neighborhood. Please remove it from the CIP.

Join the Task Force

We're organizing residents across Potomac Glen, the Willows of Potomac, Lakewood Estates, and surrounding neighborhoods. This is a long campaign — even if the June vote doesn't go our way, MCPS planning won't start for three years, and there will be many more chances to be heard. Share your info so we can coordinate.

Your info is only used by task force coordinators. We won't share it, sell it, or use it for anything other than this campaign.

✓ Thank you! You've been added to the task force list. We'll be in touch soon.

What happened with the County Council?
Residents sent many emails and calls to Councilmembers Jawando and Sayles. Unfortunately, they did not change their votes, and the bus depot remains in the six-year Capital Improvements Program (CIP). The decision now moves to the MCPS Board of Education.
Why does Shady Grove Road matter?
Seven Willows of Potomac streets only have ingress and egress on Shady Grove Road, putting hundreds of homes directly in the path of any traffic increase. Residents have also heard the depot's main entrance and exit is proposed on Shady Grove Road — which would funnel hundreds of buses past those streets twice a day.
Is this a one-time vote, or a longer campaign?
Both. May 26 is the deadline to contact the Board before they finalize the budget vote in June. But even if the line item stays in the CIP, planning doesn't start for three years — so there will be more opportunities to oppose the depot as MCPS goes through public review. This is why the Task Force matters: we're building a sustained, organized community voice for the long haul.
Who am I emailing and calling now?
All seven members of the Montgomery County Board of Education. The phone number (240-740-3030) reaches the Board office. They vote on the budget in June.
When is the deadline?
Please send your email and make your call before May 26, ahead of the Board's June budget vote.
Should I both email and call?
Yes, if you can. Emails create a written record and calls add a personal voice. Doing both makes the strongest impression.
What about the petition?
The petition is a helpful additional show of support, but officials weigh direct emails and phone calls from constituents far more heavily than petition signatures. Please email and call first, then sign the petition as a bonus.
Can I personalize the message?
Absolutely — and it helps. Add your name, your street, how long you've lived here, and one concern that matters most to you.
Can renters and nearby residents take part?
Yes. Anyone who lives in, works near, or regularly travels through the area is welcome to contact the Board.
